Shuumatsu no Izetta, also referred to as Izetta: The Last Witch or Izetta, Die Letzte Hexe, is an anime series which was aired in Fall 2016, from 1 October to 17 December. Masaya Fujimori directed this show under the studio Ajia-do Animation Works. This series is composed of 12 episodes. Each of them is 25 minutes long.
Zien’s Synopsis on Shuumatsu no Izetta
Shuumatsu no Izetta is set in an alternate universe of World War II. The war in the story involves a small country called Eylstadt fighting against the invasion of Germania.
At that time, the head of the Germanian Empire wanted to expand its territories. On 1 September 1939, it invaded its neighboring country, Livonia. The Republic of Thermidor together with the Kingdom of Britannia declared a war against it but to no avail.
Now, Germania is planning to invade Africa and the Mediterranean. To make this happen, they want to open up a shorter route for their ally, the Romulus Federation. In which case, they need to invade Eylstadt.
As Eylstadt’s first princess and archduchess, Ortfiné Fredericka von Eylstadt, also known as Finé, risks her life to reach Westria, a neutral country, so that she can make political negotiations. She hopes to forge an alliance with Britannia by marrying Prince Henry, its heir to the throne.
Unfortunately though, Finé was already too late. Apparently, Germania had already broken the defenses of Eylstadt’s borders. At the same time, Germanian soldiers captured her.
Thanks to an unexpected encounter with her childhood friend though, Finé was able to escape them. Finé’s childhood friend is none other than Izetta, a red-haired witch. With her help, Finé safely reaches Landsbruck, Eylstadt’s capital.
How will Izetta’s involvement in the war affect Eylstadt’s battles against Germania?
Zien’s Thoughts on Shuumatsu no Izetta
Shuumatsu no Izetta‘s plot is very interesting as it combines history with fantasy. So I find it quite sad that it only has 12 episodes. Despite that, the show does give a nice explanation on how Izetta’s magic works. I like how her power has certain limitations which was also clearly discussed in its next episodes. Thus, Shuumatsu no Izetta somehow reminds me of Full Metal Alchemist, another anime which involves both war and magic in its story.
Among the unforgettable lines in this anime, I think this is the most inspiring one coming from Finé as the next leader of Eylstadt:
I’m sorry. As I am now, I can’t even let you choose where to lay down your lives. I’m supposed to tell you not how to die, but how to live.
– Ortfiné Fredericka von Eylstadt (Shuumatsu no Izetta)
Art and Animation
Shuumatsu no Izetta has a very appealing cast. It has great designs for both its male and female characters. They are not too young nor too old for the roles they play. Yes, it is also full of action scenes as one may expect with its story. Spiced with good animation, I was unable to avert my eyes from any of its episodes.
Having a good animation is one thing but making each episode have a lasting effect to its viewers is another. I like how Shuumatsu no Izetta amplifies its audience’ feelings by perfectly matching its background sounds with every scene.
This anime has nice opening and ending songs too. Every episode starts with cross the line by AKINO with bless4 and ends with Hikari Aru Basho e by May’n.
Overall, I’d recommend Shuumatsu no Izetta especially to those looking for series that blends magic with military warfare well. This anime is exciting to watch as it makes you think about what-ifs.
